History

The Non Profit Cortium was launched in April 1998 after it became clear that the non-profit sector in South Africa required a dedicated and coherent response to the funding crisis facing organisations. The initial members were the UK-based Charities Aid Foundation, South African NGO Coalition and the Southern African Grantmakers Association, with CAF seconding its Southern African representative to coordinate and convene the Consotium.

CAF has been the only active partner in the NPC for the past three years, resulting in the organisations' management and staff deciding to register the organisation as an independent Section 21 company.

More recently, the Consortium has extended its services to other non-profit organisations after it became clear that the demand for its services was more widespread than initially envisaged. In addition, a wider constituency gives the Consortium greater leverage to lobby benefits for the sector and its employees.
