Research Unit

Research is a key component of the NPP’s lobbying activities. It informs on critical legislative issues that impact on the sector and provides the basis for our lobbying activities.

In the past two years NPP has commissioned research on the National Development Act (NDA) and the National Lotteries Act, apart from numerous tax submissions to Parliament. Also, a cost-benefit

study, which focused on issues around Non Profit Organisation (NPO) taxation was completed and presented at the NPP conference held from 26 – 27 March 2003, Johannesburg.

In view of this, the NPP has decided to form an independent research unit. Currently, the research unit is developing proposals for research in the following areas:

In addition, there will be ad hoc research projects linked to requests for submissions to Parliament, national forums, workshops and conferences. Other research projects will be driven by outcomes of consultative meetings with NPOs that we come into contact with in all the provinces.

Regular meetings with other stakeholders such as research institutions, South African Revenue Services, NPO Directorate, Southern African Grantmakers Association, the Centre for Civil Society, Lawyers, and Donors, amongst others, will inform our research process.

Changes in laws and the way they are implemented also inform our research focus. The key to success will be through extensive consultation with various stakeholders (national and international) and the use of a combination of research tools.
